Veteran California emcee Murs and Texas beatsmith Wiardon deliver this heartfelt track titled “Flowers For Guru”, a 7/17 birthday dedication to late rapper Guru (Of Gang Starr fame). The track is as solemn as they come and employs a blend of jazzy horns, soft hushed grooves and an overarching sombre texture that accentuates the emotions behind the lyrics. Murs set the tone with his laidback flow and pays tribute to Guru with heartfelt lines and even interpolates some of Guru’s flows into the mix as a sign of respect. The chorus section mellows out with past interviews of Guru detailing the power of music and I must say, the message and gems he was dropping are still cogent to this day.

“Flowers For Guru” is the lead single from the forthcoming deluxe edition of Murs & Wiardon’s speak n spell EP, which adds several unreleased cuts as well as remixes from ProducerTrentTaylor and Balt Getty. The original version of the EP dropped last spring, spearheaded by the “Starting Lineup” single featuring Larry June and ICECOLDBISHOP (stream on Youtube).
