NYC-based Singaporean singer/songwriter Slodown steps into our site with SINCE WE LAST SPOKE, a 10-track album that blends experimental R&B/hip-hop/soul with emotionally charged songwriting. Throughout the course of the project, Slodown takes listeners on a journey filled with emotional pain, loss, and self-identity.

The project starts with “HUSH,” featuring Sweet Treats and serves as an emotional floodgate that helps set the tone for the entire project. The vocal stylings match the title as Slowdown delivers a laidback whispered performance that slowly rises against a brooding and dynamic backdrop.  The next set of tracks highlights Slowdown’s expressive vocal style, which is punctuated by airy vocals, sparse ethereal musical arrangements and transitions that evoke tension and resolution. “KNOTS” is built on a dark, brooding beat with future R&B aesthetics, while “POISON” benefits from parallel vocal stacking, subtle effects and soaring sustained vocal notes that evoke emotional turbulence.
The collaborations help bring an extra flavour and, in some cases, find Slowdown playing a background role, allowing his guest to shine. W.U.Huang‘s trippy vocals shimmer bright on the cinematic “GRAND STREET”  and complement Slodown’s whispered vocals, while rapper Titiola takes over the second half of “MAGNOLIA.” The track is particularly striking as Slowdown employs an extremely tuned vocal effect setting, creating an ethereal ambiance that progresses into a downtempo R&B/trap vibe where the aforementioned Titiola steps in to deliver a reflective rap verse. On the other hand, “MAIN STREET” highlights Slowdown’s natural vocal strength over a barebones backdrop comprising moody pads, but the main performance is by rapper Granata, who takes listeners on an emotional ride through the ups and downs of relationships, life and a bit of regret. “I GET IT NOW” continues the dark cinematic theme but without indulging in verbose instrumentation. The moody chords are punctuated by brooding synths with subtle musical elements that work alongside Slodown’s breathy vocals.  The final track, “HOMICIDE,” features Linying and Dru Chen
and closes the project on a high note. Linying leads the charge with her resonating vocals on the intro before the track switches into a guitar-driven ballad filled with soft whispered tones that flutter in and out of the backdrop.
Slodown’s lyrical approach is mostly thematic and focuses on love, heartbreak, and emotional turmoil while using engaging storytelling as the driving force.
Other notable tracks include “NOT READY,” a plucky and summer-tinged cut that evokes sad memories. The song arrangement is built on a drumless verse and boisterous chorus section, creating a compelling push-and-pull. “REAL ENOUGH” fuses traditional R&B with experimental aesthetics and an off-beat melodic runs with highly controlled vibrato over a snapping drum groove.
