FOCI – Peace Up

FOCI delivers another movie off his album, The Achievement Gap. Pay attention to the words that are being spoken. Shouts to L.SCatterbrain & Percee P for being featured in the music video.

“While many emcees refer to the drug trade and their prowess in the underworld as a stepping stone to their own success in the music industry, few recognize the damage that substance abuse has on not just the user, but the families and friends of those close to them. In “Peace Up” Produced by Diverse (Young Buck, Bishop Lamont, Dilated Peoples) Directed by Eric Heights (ArtBattleLA, KCET,..

K-Def & The 45 King – Back To The Beat

The word ‘dopeness’ can’t begin to qualify this brilliant collaboration between K-Def & the 45 King. Students of the game would instantly recognize both names albeit from different works in the hip-Hop timeline.  It’s somewhat rare hearing two established producers  crafting a full project in this time and age but judging from their past works, I knew I was in for a special treat.

The entire project just as the title ‘Back to the beat’ suggests, attempts(and succeeds) to take the listener right into the thick of the BEAT. That is all that matters here, the soulful chops, jazzy piano..

Waldo – Home Again (World Around Records Single Series)

Its week two in the World Around Records ‘Single Series’ and  ‘Home Again’ by Waldo is the kind of track full of vitality, from it’s energetic break beat to its lark-song like horns and woodwind, that would make a wholesome breakfast if it were composed of macronutrients and not transduced sound waves and such.   Think of your favourite instrumental interlude from a Dexter Wansel LP, or any funk-soul record of the era, and you’ll get an idea of what Waldo is channeling with this seasonal composition.

Catch-up on last week’s single, and check back in next week..

Brandy Shanice – Eclection!

In my opinion, a debut project is one of two things: something that works, or something that doesn’t. There is no middle ground, no sitting on the fence if you’re trying to make that best first impression. Nowadays, with lowered attention spans and a multitude of musicians springing out of the woodwork, it’s really hard to zero in on the more talented crop, but a name like Brandy Shanice automatically raises my (and I want to believe it’s the same for everyone else) expectations, and fortunately the singer definitely brings it. Sound-wise, her producers craft the perfect soundscape for her to flex..
