Zion I – Juggernaut

Zion I boast an extensive body of work which incorporates many different styles of hip-hop, so much so that it’s hard to pinpoint one particular sound they embody; instead he duo from California take bits and pieces from sub-cultures of hip-hop and reinterpret them through their own unique angles, oozing creativity and ideas. The album that brought them to the attention of heads worldwide, Mind Over Matter, was released 15 years ago and it mastered an introspective boom-bap style in the mould of DJ Shadow. Fast forward to today and Zion I’s new single ‘Juggernaut’ sounds like a progressive West Coast take on Southern trap music.

Robot Orchestra – Radio Juicy Mix 138

Wooo so I just got off from listening to this week’s Radio Juicy mix (uploaded a lil late) and it’s hot. Robot Orchestra drops a mix full of remixes of Masta Ace to Aesop Rock from mndsgn to the man himself, so smoothly blended together and so varied. Enjoy these interpretations!

Phoniks/Raashan Ahmad – That Feeling (ft. Slim Kid 3)

Producer Phoniks has teamed up with Raashan Ahmad for a project called “Above The Clouds” and the first release from said project is the summery, soulful joint called That Feeling. The song features Pharcyde member Slim Kid 3 and I must say, it’s definitely that song you gotta have in your playlist to bump during your downtime. A brilliant feel good song that really captures the essence of a typical serene summer afternoon.

Hit the play button and get with the program.

Marvelous Mag – Fetti Feat Hus Kingpin & Smoovth Calhoun

No matter how much we say we keep it “real”, the truth of the matter is, money sure makes things move a little faster (if I may use that word). We all out there, grinding away, crunching numbers, filing documents, making beats and putting in work just to stay afloat in these hard times. The message here on Marvelous Mag‘s new cut  “Fetti ” is clear as day (shouts to Doris),  get up, get out and get something or rather chase that Fetti.

Employing two of his cohorts, Hus Kingpin and Smoovth over this moody, organ driven tune,..

Red Pill – Look What This World Did To Us

Red Pill focuses on what I consider ‘real rap’. There’s a place for braggadocio and ignorance and words for the sake of words in hip-hop, but it’s also important to keep it heartfelt, raw and personal, and it’s off the back of that Red Pill has developed such a loyal fan base and solid reputation in the underground seen. ‘Look What This World Did To Us’, the first single off the Detroit MC’s upcoming solo album of the same name, displays this perfectly, as he shares precisely what’s on his mind.

Look What This World Did To Us is due 7th April..

Thee ReaL – one fo Dilla

So it’s Dilla Month and my Soundcloud stream is full of tracks called ‘one for Dilla’, but here’s one that really sticks out. It’s by a producer called Thee ReaL who I hadn’t come across previously, and the whispy vocals are backed up by swinging kicks and one of the best snares I’ve heard. Very dope.

Big things happened at The Word is Bond Studios last week.

First up, Dustin Moore stopped by to discuss his upcoming shows, being nominated for Local Album of the Year, and opening for Talib Kweli.
