San Fernando Valley-raised rapper/songwriter Khern$ is not new to the site, but this is the first time we have reviewed a project from him. The project in question, Under the Influence Volume 4.2.0 Side A is a 6-track mixtape that sees the rapper flowing over 6 classic beats that span different eras of rap music. The beats are laced with edgy raps that blend insight, a lot of bravado and feature other emerging rappers in tow.
The first track uses Styles P’s “Good Times” instrumental and is a showcase of lyricism that pays homage to the herb of their choice. This is followed by the hard-hitting “Barry Bonds” beat, and we hear Khern$ ‘s expressive flow and his knack for switching things up with lines like”All my caps locked in, I pass, her eyes shifted, everything Big, where the fuck the rig, tryna smoke and dab while I’m driving pass the pig.” His wit and use of vivid imagery add an extra layer to the track. The fun continues with the next track, another classic instrumental produced by Lord Finesse that the late Big L rhymed over on the radio in the ’90s, and Khern$ destroys it. His voice is commanding, and the unapologetic rhymes are on par. The other thing of note is how he emulates Big L’s fast-paced cadence towards the middle section and takes it to another level while the other emcee comes through to close the deal with a laidback flow. The next track is the rock-infused “Death Of Autotune” instrumental, and the rapper leaves nothing to the imagination with his off-kilter rhymes. Lines like “Twin bitches on my dick, look like a mirror image/Running down the court just for sport, it’s a simple scrimage/Big dogs, y’all do little raps/Never miss a shot, what you thought? Hand the pistol back.” The following tracks switch things up with the midtempo bounce of the South and  Lupe’s “Mural” instrumental. Khern$ showcases his versatility on both tracks and easily adapts to the style of beats. He also taps into his storytelling skills with a touch of social consciousness and reflection.
Overall, Under the Influence Volume 4.2.0 Side A is an enjoyable listening experience and has a lot of nostalgic moments for lovers of hiphop.

Under the Influence Vol 4.2.0 Side A is the first instalment of the fourth mixtape in the series of projects that he plans to drop every year on April 20th.
