Indie rap artist Revoh Wattz unveils his new project NONXM, a 10-track project that blends smooth and hard-hitting boombap beats with excellent rapping and storytelling. The project is produced by Funky Flacco and Wattz himself and together they craft a range of sounds that take audiences on an engaging trip.
“XM Intro” helps set the tone of the project but on a high note with Revoh Wattz flexing his lyrical biceps over an upbeat and smooth soundscape. Lines like “I’m ripping in the cut got the rugrats digging it/Solidifying, this should be a must-have” cut through the mix and underpin the rapper’s motive. Similar energy is emitted on “Defcon 0,” which starts with a moody vocal sample and a smooth drum break. Here, Wattz steps up to bat with his bravado raps and use of dynamic cadences which keep things engaging from start to finish. The project moves into reflective and introspective themes from this point with “Be Ready” being the first. The production is soulful and somewhat melancholic while the lyrics explore the ups and downs of life. “The Lowdown” is cinematic and evokes urgency with its ominous brass stabs, gloomy piano riffs and overall cryptic vibe. Once again, Revah Watt taps into his experiences and delivers a fusion of storytelling with a dash of bravado.
The project shifts focus once again with tracks like “Last Call” that show defiance against the odds but from a upbeat and hopeful perspective. Lines like “I’m putting up the deuce, going tow to tow with the daily man/If this’s a simulation, I’m pissing off all the aliens/I work till Sunday and it’s only fucking Monday, got me bringing down my baggage, somebody clear the runway for me” underscore Revoh Watt’s work ethic. “Phase” employs a familiar sample but Funky Flacco flips it into something different. The track is comforting, solemn and groovy all at once. The track is about resilience and patience to push through the craziness that life throws at you. “Gotta Move” features singer/songwriter Red Luna and is a solid follow-up to the previous tracks. Notably for its aspirational and reflective themes. As the title suggests, the track deals with finding one’s true center within the white noise and the wherewithal to know when and not to move. The next track “John Doe” is a thoughtful piece that continues the conscious themes with a focus on contentment. The final track “Livin’ (Life Ain’t Free)” is a perfect closer with its solemn textures and head-nodding groove which culminates in a heartfelt display of lyricism and insight. A notable track is “Endorphins,” a display of braggadocio and relatable themes about emotional balance and trusting in one’s gut at all times.
Overall, Revoh Wattz brings some refreshing elements to the forefront of this project. His flow is engaging and dynamic and his colourful story telling is remarkable as well.
