Prince Be of P.M. Dawn passed away last week and I felt the need to pay tribute to him on the radio. I had never played any of his music on the show prior to his passing. In fact, last year when Daddy J played a remix of P.M. Dawn’s biggest hit on DOPEfm, I was a little taken a back. I even asked him why he had played it.
Then, I saw this post by Shad and I understood it a little bit better.
I have to admit that I own three P.M. Dawn albums and that I bumped their tunes frequently back in the day. Shad is right, the albums didn’t become part of the canon of hip-hop and we kind of forgot about them. It’s a shame that it took one of the members passing away before I realized this.
Rest in Peace, Prince Be!
