Bernie Worrell passed away last week. You might not recognise the name, but I am sure you are familiar with some of his influential music. He was the keyboardist of the funk-band, Parliament-Funkadelic. He helped bring forth the signature sound that George Clinton and the two funk bands are famous for.

Worrell was a pioneer of using the Moog and making it sing. He earned the nickname “Wizard of Woo” for all of the sounds and styles he could flip using keyboards, synthesizers, organs, and the clavinet.

Worrell passed away on Friday after a battle with lung cancer. Coincidentally, I was spinning a set that day and had prepped the Parliament to Snoop Dogg transition that starts off this edition of Word is Bond Rap Radio. I had no idea he died until I was getting ready to do my set.

I wanted to pay tribute to Bernie Worrell today by playing some Parliament songs and then transitioning into rap songs that sampled them. I could have done a two-hour show on this concept alone. Parliament is one of the most sampled bands in history and for good reason, they have amazing songs and grooves.

Rest in Peace, Bernie Worrel! Thanks for all the great grooves and tunes!
