For the second year in a row, Juicy & The Doctor’s Orders have teamed up and put on an event in Manchester to celebrate the life of J Dilla. This was the first of three similar events to take place in the UK this year and it went off with a bang. There were a couple of special guests this year; Phat Kat (who hosted the night and performed a couple of his classic tracks) and Dilla’s mother, Ma Dukes Yancey. The sounds for the evening were provided by Manchester DJs Mr Scruff, Air Adam, Mr E, Illum Sphere, Jonny Dub and myself (DJ A-UP), plus Spin Doctor, who made the trip up from London.

The night kicked off with Mr Scruff playing an hour of early Dilla breaks, which set the evening off nicely. He was followed by Mr-E, Jonny Dub, Illum Sphere and Spin Doctor. Every DJ dropping very different and dope sets, but all were 100% Dilla related material. After Spin Doctor had finished on the 1s and 2s, Ma Dukes made her way to the stage to almost deafening cheers. She made a very moving speech which showed she is still clearly moved by how much her son is adored around the whole of the globe. Once the speech had ended it was myself and my good friend, and dope DJ, Air Adam’s turn to bring the house down with a back-to-back set. The majority of the crowd made sure they stayed until the very end of the night for the love of Dilla.

I’m already looking forward to next year’s party!
