Uprising South Windsor, CT-born, NYC-based artist Michael Kirby‘s latest release “Mommas Cry” is a candid examination of gang culture, toxic masculinity and its effects on the youth. Backed by a sombre and reflective soundscape, Michael walks us through the many stages of this corrosive mindset and how the immediate environment adds to it. Lines like “I know some kids who know the hustle like, hold on/I know some kids who know the hustle like the back of they hands/I know some kids who’ve got their daddies in gangs/Uncles and brothers in chains” vividly shows how the trait runs deep through different generations creating an endless cycle.
