The critically acclaimed and award-winning instrumental recording duo, Hot Mustard, is currently working on their forthcoming album, scheduled for release on March 31st, 2023 (Color Red). In the interim, they continue their slew of releases and this time they drop the lead song “Mustard Green” and its accompanying eclectic visual. The track is a blend of musical styles from the past with it’s synth-pop, funk soul aesthetics that bridge the old with the new. There is so much to unpack from the record, from the triumphant horns, crisp guitar plucks, sombre keys and rousing drum grooves amongst other elements that come into play as the song progresses.
Building on the success of their debut album Mother Sauce, the new single “Mustard Green,” the song features collaborators Jordan McLean of Antibalas on trumpet and TV on the Radio trombonist Dave “Smoota” Smith.
The animated music video was created by band member Jack Powell (Opus Thimble), whose visuals are best described as a true sui generis, sometimes drawing comparisons to Terry Gilliam (Monty Python). The visual is expressive, off-kilter and somewhat brooding as well.
