Indie Instrumental Cinematic Funk/Soul duo Hot Mustard caught our ears with their new release titled “Naked When You Come” which comes with an accompanying visualizer. The record is a blend of retro jazz, and funk with boom-bap sensibilities. The lush guitar plucks, moody cinematic strings, and horns all merge together with the alluring vocals from Kendall Coyer (The Intuitions).
The music video was created by Jack Powell (Opus Thimble), who assembled clips from old films/cartoons to make a video collage that explores the concept of material things being transient and the bitter truth that we must part with all our Earthly possessions when we leave this world. Powell really brings life to the theme of the song with his abstract and thought-provoking visuals.
“Naked When You Come” is the first music released by the duo since their debut full-length album, Mother Sauce (2022) dropped earlier this year. Currently, HM is gearing up for the release of their second full-length album, Seconds, due for release in early 2023 (Color Red).
Multimedia artist/guitarist/producer Jack Powell and bassist Nick Carusos have again linked up with Eddie Roberts (New Mastersounds) to release the track on his Color Red label. Working their own distinctive flavors into classic recipes, the duo draws influence from first generation boom bap hip-hop, 60s era soul-jazz, and vintage cinematic library style recordings yielding an end result that is, quite frankly, stunning and wildly addictive. This is as hip as hip can get.
