We celebrate International Women’s Day every year on DOPEfm by dedicating all seven hours of our overnight radio programming to the Women in Hip-Hop.
We have a lot of great things planned for this evening’s show. We kick it all off with an hour-long mixset composed entirely of female emcees. We also have a special two-hour edition of Know Your History focusing on all of the important moments where women were at the forefront of hip-hop music and culture. We have an interview and guest mixset from female deejay L’oqenz.
I also talk to Miss.She.Ill, K from Class of 93, Dominique Larue and Ash Knuckles in a special roundtable panel. We have a frank discussion about the issues surrounding women in this culture and in society in general.
I interview Steph Clark of Beatbinjaz, a hip-hop organization that is doing big things in Hamilton from artist promotion, booking, and event planning. They continually bring great artists to the city and throw some amazing events and concerts. It was nice to sit down with her just prior to Hip-Hop is in The Building.
We run our show out of the campus at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. This year, we wanted to have some representation from the student body. So we talk to graduate student Marquitta Smith and have an enlightening discussion about the roles women play, the challenges they face, and how that all ties in to hip-hop.
All in all, we have seven hours of content planned for tonight’s show as we celebrate International Women’s Day on DOPEfm radio. We will also be sharing this content on our weekly underground hip-hop podcast over the next several weeks.
We hit the air at 12:00 midnight and run straight through to Sunday morning at 7:00 a.m. EST.
There are several ways you can listen to the program every Saturday night. Turn your radio dial 93.3 fm if you are in the Hamilton, Ontario, Canada area.
