Singer/songwriter Dana McCoy‘s latest single, “Alright,” serves as the final leak from her forthcoming EP, When We Wake. The modern R&B/Soul infused ballad explores loss, acceptance and the painful emotions of moving on from something that no longer serves her. Backed by a soothing and warm backdrop comprising rich pads, slick guitar licks and soft headnodding drums, Dana McCoy reflects on a past relationship and the games involved that led to the widening of a gorge. Amred with her sultry and expressive vocals, she takes us right into the mix of the matter with lines like “All your sweet words leave a bitter taste/ promises made so casually/Long forgotten, unanswered words left,” which underscores her pain points. However, she comes to terms with the situation and ultimately moves on and lets go of the anchor weighing her down.
Reflecting on the inspiration behind “Alright,” McCoy shares, “I think I’ve reached the age where people call less, everyone is settling into their own lives, and I think it hurts more not to acknowledge the changes in a relationship. This song is me accepting and acknowledging those changes.”
“Alright” was written by Dana McCoy and produced by Jane Swane.
Dana’s been releasing songs independently since 2018. Early releases like Broken Boy and Is It Okay introduced Dana’s vulnerable yet self-assured songwriting. Night after Night, which has 1.2M streams to date, garnered widespread support, earning spots in playlists like Spotify’s Butter and Fresh Finds. Her debut EP ‘To Those Who Wait’ showcased an alluring alt-R&B sound, and this new project adds another layer to the rich tapestry of McCoy’s artistry.
