Uptown Bronx native Ace Kang delivers the deluxe version of his album Shenanigans & Antics Deluxe to our notice. The 15-track body of work sees him sharing personal tales about his life and journey as a young black man and a rising artist in the game. This deluxe version is equipped with 5 extra tracks to complete the mission.

“2:15 pm” opens up the project with its dreamy and sombre flute and airy vocal sample layered over sparse drums. Here, Ace makes it known that he is trying to live his life with less drama as he spits “I don’t argue over text, you got some nerve/I ain’t like none of them problems you heard/drop top shit in the beamer, that shit is steaming we smoke through the suburbs”. The calming feel is accentuated by his laidback flow and unbothered demeanour. This is followed by “Poem For You” which starts off with a melancholic string and builds up with a hard-hitting drill drum groove and sees Ace kicking bravado-laden bars with direct aim to the naysayers and haters. He doesn’t hold anything back on this tune and shows off his verbal prowess while putting his foot on the necks of his detractors. Next up is the bass-heavy “ANTICS” which sounds like the new age off-kilter club trap sounds and I must say, Ace sounds comfortable and just like the title suggests, he gets up to no good with his expressive flow and off-kilter raps like “And they set the shock value, I provide it like Blanka/Big willy, big huh, Nigga Kerry Tonka/Used to be the type to bring your hoe up to my concerts/Leave my hand prints on her ass like markers”. “Leaves Change” sees Ace Kang get introspective and he takes us down memory lane and how time changes friendships for better or worse. Over a smooth soulful boom-bap backdrop, he shares a heartfelt tale of a close friend who decided to do things his way and the consequences that followed were beyond their control.

“Be There” starts off with a pitched-up melodic vocal sample before the drums come into play and we hear Ace’s autotuned melodic chorus that seamlessly blends with the piano-laden backdrop. Once again, Ace gets into another story about the blossoming love between him and a ride-or-die chick. “Too Many To Count” sees Ace teaming up with fellow emcee Pauliee for a solid one-two punch as they both trade bars over the thick 808-driven backdrop. “Gold Hearts//Silent Lambs” dives into Ace’s life and the many experiences that shaped him into the man that he is. Over the cinematic backdrop, Ace comes through with vivid storytelling that introduces listeners to his crew and how loyalty runs deep with lines like “One thing about me, we gonna keep shit real/You feel I feel, plan out the same plan for mills/So how can I backstab you when I’m telling you I love you/Loyalty forever, you my dog then I trust you”.

On the track “Typical”, Ace employs a retro soul sample with thick drum grooves to relay his message that focus on his grind. His laidback unassuming flow is quite engaging and his use of stream-of-consciousness style is an extra touch that keeps listeners locked in. The fun doesn’t stop as Ace gets down and dirty on “STOOPVILLE”, a dark and cinematic track that once again sees the rapper in his element as he flexes his verbal biceps over the haters. The final track “Hibiscus” is a love track that showcases Ace’s melodic range as he starts off with a soul-gripping performance as he pours his heart on wax for that special someone who has been on his side since day one. Ace is not afraid to show his vulnerability and lines like “My precious flower, my precious partner, we ain’t fighting over power” help assert his true feelings towards her. Overall Shenanigans & Antics Deluxe, is quite diverse and engaging with its range of topics and production. It is cohesive, and engaging and gives listeners a bit of variety and even tracks like the introspective “Them Conversations” or the club-ready “4:08AM” show Ace’s versatility in all its glory.
