Charlotte, North Carolina-based rapper/producer PHAZE GAWD unveils his new project GoZodie!, an 8-track project that brings to light the rapper’s new creative ventures. The production here is raw hard-hitting trap beats with anthemic attributes. Sometimes PHAZE GAWD adopts a subtle melodic style to garnish the tracks to break any form of monotony. On the subject matter, he does touch on things that matter to him like self-doubts, mental health and his growth as a young man and artist.
The floodgates open with the anthemic “GoZodie!,” a cinematic trap track underpinned by self-assessment and a touch of bravado. PHAZE GAWD opens up with lines like “People switch up like seasons, no reason, no rhyme/trying to find peace when I’m rolling off Pine/ My lady keep asking if I’m fine/How can I tell her I fell off behind/How can I tell her I’m losing my mind” that underscore his tribulations and trepidations. It is quite a revealing piece that gives audiences a glimpse into what makes him tick. The next track “Lets Get To It” starts with a live performance that captures PHAZE GAWD in his element but things gets more interesting when the song begins. The horn-driven track is energetic and punchy and is anchored on PHAZE GAWD’s go-getter mentality and boastful rhymes, reminding the opposition that he is not the type to horse around. The energy stays on the same frequency on “Tryon Rd Zo,” a resounding tribute to his stomping grounds. He steps up to represent his hometown with no holds barred like “Breaking my hand black out in a rage/Lost in a haze/I get my flowers, I get the praise/Niggaz talking too much got too much to say.”
PHAZE GAWD employs a wide range of flows and cadences throughout the project and knows his pocket when it comes to upbeat and mid-tempo soundscapes. Tracks like “2ToneTint” have a catchy element that adds to the lyrical quality while “Caught Up” employs a blend of melodic trap and R18 story telling. The former is anthemic and punchy while the latter has a Trap/R&B aesthetic with a sultry hook to match. The tracks are threaded by a short skit “can u talk? (Interlude)” that serves as the intro to the latter. The last two tracks see PHAZE GAWD bringing in a handful of friends to join in the fun.“Man 4A Minute” features JAY STORM and is chock full of no-holds-barred boastful raps over an anthemic bass-heavy soundscape. “LTNK” featuring Raddre, Keychainz Hefner, and Walt for the perfect posse cut which is anchored by the different styles showcased by each emcee. The production has an ominous organ, dark brass stabs, thick 808 drums and of course street street-savvy bars.
GoZodie!, is quite an upbeat project that flows seamlessly as most of the tracks shave similar energies and the raps are versatile so lovers of the story-driven trap genre will dig this.
