Music 4 Mutants, Vol. 2: MUTANT DYNASTY is the newest release from the duo Mykii J and The Kelly. The siblings are pushing their brand of genre-bending mutant power-packed music to the world and on this 19-track effort, they bring a refreshing blend of hard-hitting beats with engaging rhymes.
The concept project is predicated on the mutant theme where Mykii J and The Kelly take on the roles of characters with the X-factor trying to weave through discrimination from the populace and ostracization while doing the right thing and living up to their life’s purpose. The project opens with the “Mutant Headquarters (Intro),” and the stage is set for audiences to peer into their world. The duo hit the ground running with the hard-hitting “The Come Up” which sees both rappers sending warning shots to the detractors. Mykii leads the charge with lines like “Say they wanna dance but these niggaz couldn’t shuck N jive/Call me McCauley ‘cause I’m finna get rich kid/I ain’t slowing down till there’s Richie on my wrist kid.” This is followed by The Kelly’s sultry breathy flow and bravado bars. “I’m on the come up, you can keep your day job at the Hyatt/I eat these bitches for breakfast that’s what I call a diet/I told my brother that this rap shit is more like a hobby/Since I was young I said I want an Oscar like I’m Halle.” This is followed by “Trouble” which samples a classic pop tune and revamps it into a modern cinematic drill soundscape underpinned by edgy raps from the duo. On “Charger,” they employ a brooding and bass-heavy backdrop and feature expressive bars laced with engaging pop references and a catchy hook. “Gettin’ Serious” lives up to its title and is bolstered by a bouncy club-ready backdrop comprising sparse and heavy drums and cinematic texture. Here, the duo drop catchy bars with catchy elements to get clubgoers riled up.
“Perception vs. Reality” is a short spoken word interlude that dives into the concept of external validation and perspectives which leads to the heartfelt “Heartbreak Connoisseur.” The track is heartwarming and shows a vulnerable side to the duo. Mykii J pours his heart over the solemn piano-driven backdrop with bars like “I ain’t a ref but you hurt me and I’m keeping score/‘Cause when it comes to heartbreak, the kid’s a Connoisseur/ Now I put the walls like China because my heart is sore.” He reflects on his experiences with loss and heartbreak and tries to find his inner peace by coming to terms with his trauma. “Same Energy” is the hard-hitting anthem dedicated to detractors, haters and fairweather friends. “Dark Phoenix” is a heartfelt spoken word piece/interlude that dives into self-identity and the ups and downs of soul-searching to find one’s true origin through the Americas back to the motherland. The lyrics are quite vivid, emotionally punchy and soul-stirring. This is followed by the duality concept track “Repertoire” and “Bounce” featuring DJ Lolo. The former is as moody as they come and showcases The Kelly’s engaging storytelling skills as she weaves an intricate tale of deceit, and self-preservation with lines like “You only give a fuck about self, it’s giving vanity/This colonizer tried to make me doubt my fucking sanity/Damn he so fucked up, I think he damaged like he Danity” while the latter is another club-ready tune that is perfect to get lit to.
Other notable tracks include the bouncy soulful guitar licks of “BIO,” the R&B-infused “Guy Who Loves Me,” and the contemporary vibes of “Can’t Stop Me” which is bolstered by reflective lyrics from the duo. We get to hear the stories of their humble beginnings with heartfelt lines like “Way too many problems, had to go and get my GED, then registered at CCP and copped a 4 year degree/Now I’m making hits like K.O.D/I shine hard like an LED.” The playful “Missin’ Me” showcases The Kelly’s expressive flow and bravado raps and she gets to flex on the detractors while having fun at every turn. The interludes “Mutant Matriarch & Patriarch” and “Mutants Unite” are interesting skits with the former dealing with couple-goals and advice while the latter contains audio testimonials from fans who identify themselves as Mutants and share their candid thoughts of Mykii J and The Kelly.
The project closes out with alternative versions of the tracks in the form of “Same Energy (Recharged)” and “Bounce 2.0” featuring DJ Lolo. The tracks are ramped up into hard-hitting and club-ready remixes that help close the project on a high note.
In the end , Music 4 Mutants, Vol. 2: MUTANT DYNASTY, represents music for the outcasts, the rebels and the outliers who shun the norm and do what is necessary to fulfil their purpose in life.
