Cypriot artist MoulD is a man who wears many hats in the entertainment industry. From visual storytelling to experimental instrumentation, anchored on Greek rebetiko influence, MoulD aims to break from the norm with his debut album Its more FUN in the DARK. The 12-track project is a collection of songs that explore topics ranging from chaos, desire, rebellion, and raw emotion. With each song, he pushes the envelope, rejecting the mundane and opting for a profound and unorthodox approach.
The first track “I don’t wanna be with someone that doesn’t wanna fuck me” is a bold statement punctuated by a blend of laidback and growling vocal performance over powerchords. It’s an emotional response to yearning for that special someone and expressing what he truly wants from them. This is followed by “cUrSE,” a dark, moody piece brimming with distorted guitar riffs and soft drums and growing vocals. The track explores emotional manipulation and heartbreak with lines like “Open in the heart /And close in the mind /Probably she meant that I’m an easy target /For her to play her sick games on me /If you’re reading this /means that you need my attention now .”Next is the reflective “Don’t Miss Me When I’m DeaD,” a midtempo piece that blends nu-metal with a dash of hip-hop and grunge. The track explores themes of heartbreak, self-pity and internal conflict of love and hate. On the tracks “MAD” and “Blood Drips,” MoulD steps into new territory with a fusion of contemporary dark metal with edgy rock elements. His knack for painting vivid pictures is his strong point as he dives into defiance, inadequacy and loss. His off-kilter approach is noteworthy as he strives to go deeper than superficial themes.
Thus far, Its more FUN in the DARK revels in the gloomy side of things, but MoulD lightens up the mood on “The Sky Where We Collide.” Here, he reflects on finding true love and details the euphoric feeling of being lost in it. Lines like “I Never wanted to stay/Until I ‘vs seen your eyes/I realized that I’m not all alone/I ‘ll never forget/How strong is what I felt/The moment I have seen the fire in you” underscores his happiness, even if it’s for a fleeting moment. “SUMMONING MEMORIES” digs up his past memories filled with pain, while “To Vals Ton Gamimenon Oneiron” is a grim tale of suffering, pain and the power of comforting memories. MoulD bares his soul on “The Forest Where I Say My Goodbyes,” showing vulnerability with a dash of self-awareness. In the cinematic “Generation EnD ,“ he embodies the free spirit, basking in the now as there is nothing left but the end. It’s a grim track that explores mortality and acceptance of fate. The last two tracks “The World Is Upside Down” and “The Sound Of My Last Day” help bring the project to a close with topics dealing with loss, spirituality and depression. The former is a rousing, electric guitar-laden cut, while the latter is a mellow piece with chilled vocal runs and heartwrenching lyrics that dig deep into the artist’s psyche.
Overall, Its more FUN in the DARK is as dark as it claims. from mental health, love, loss, to even self-harm, MoulD doesn’t shy away from pouring his all on wax.
