Brooklyn based production duo Jehs Beats and Mr. Brown tap Jean Grae to craft this ominous single titled “Taking It All Back.” Jean Grae channels her inner most self laced with a grim, devil may care attitude. The atmospheric, bass-rich instrumental perfectly complements the shape-shifting vocals from Grae. Her ability to weave in and out of the varying musical elements is jaw-dropping from a listener perspective, as she uses her voice both like an instrument and as a means of making a point. She’s essentially taking what’s hers and not giving a damn what anyone thinks, and she’s doing so while seamlessly shifting from singing to rapping and everything in between.
Grae’s approach emphasizes the sci-fi aesthetic presented by both Jehs and Brown, who are intent on working with more like-minded artists in effort to piece together a bigger project. Keep an ear to the ground for whatever these two release next. And of course, you already knew to do that after hearing this track.
