“Ego Death” is as eclectic and cinematic as they come. The production starts with a layered sample that has Soul, funk and experimental elements before switching into a mody tetxure over a crunchy drum break and dusty basslines. SMOOTHDAWOLF leads the charge with his commanding flow and stylish lyrical schemes like “here’s a snippet of the flavor we bring , dogs get to sniffin don’t get it twisted Mr seven and Da Wolf got written dope, close your eyes use your imagination even when your broke.” This is followed by “High-Breed”, a 2-part track that starts with a mid-tempo and gritty track made up of dark samples, reverberated vocal one shots, rich pianos and a crunchy drum groove. here, the rapper showcases his lyrical dexterity with a wild variety of flows. The second half is mellow and sombre and continues the rapper’s edgy rhymes that blend lots of bravado bars with off-kilter schemes,
The second half of the EP is made up of the title track ”Psychedelic Smoothiez” and the final track“All About Timin’”. The former is composed of a melancholic and pitched-down dreamy texture that exudes ethereal aesthetics layered over downtempo drum breaks while the latter is a blend of reflective and vivid storytelling about his life and a touch of stream of consciousness. For the most part, it’s a pure display of his lyrical prowess and while the subject matter doesn’t stick to one particular theme, listeners of raw undiluted underground hip-hop can appreciate his unfiltered approach.
