Brisbane-based rapper/songwriter Chong Ali‘s new single “The Score” is a reflective and insightful track that explores social/identity politics, growth and personal struggles from an authentic perspective. Tapping into his Vietnamese roots, his love for hip-hop culture and his upbringing in the southern neighbourhoods in Brisbane, Chong Ali takes listeners on his life-changing journey from a kid to a young man who has walked through the fire and faced his fears. The track is bolstered by a warm and solemn piano-driven arrangement with soft boom-bap drums. Here, Chong Ali talks about his life and experiences with lines like “search inside your soul for a little light that flickers
feed it with some thoughts that are yours and original/be comfy in your own skin/ that shit is non fictional yeah facts, I never got nowhere fast by pretending” which underscores his changing perspective.
Brisbane-born artist Chong Ali is a product of the Vietnamese diaspora after his parents successfully escaped the Vietnam War. Chong Ali formed the rap group EMR with a couple of friends and released their debut album Elevate,’ shortly the crew rebranded themselves as Pistola Ave and it was in these collaborative environments that Chong Ali developed his abilities as a rapper and producer. Now performing as a solo artist Chong pushes his artistic limits as he galvanizes his message of authentic representation and unflinching storytelling.
