Atlanta-based Colombian rapper Butch Vega unveils his new album The World Wants Different, an 11 track body of work that is a culmination of years behind the scenes. This is his first album in 3 years and it’s a testament to his work ethic and craftmanship as an artist who wants to make the best music for his fans. The project is also noteworthy for its experimentation with sounds and musical styles and Butch Vega fusing his Spanish roots into the mix alongside his ATL swagger.

The project starts with the energetic “TROUBLESOME” which represents Butch Vega’s manifesto and clarifies his mission statement. Inspired by his life and the never-ending grind, Butch Vega steps on the podium to remind everyone that he takes his art seriously. The next track “BAD FOR ME” is a sultry modern R&B/infused hiphop track featuring Patrick Zae and Alan Who. The chorus is memorable and the melodic runs are hypnotic while Butch Vega’s expressive storytelling about a new flame and the ups and downs of their relationship keeps listeners locked in from start to finish. On tracks like “GRAFFiTi” and “CiTY WATER,” the rapper delivers a blend of anthemic beats with South American rhythms and grooves. The former has a carnival vibe with triumphant horn-like riffs while the latter has a hypnotic percussion with a touch of cumbia and salsa vibes. Here, Butch Vega proudly reps his Columbian roots seamlessly fusing Spanish and English.

 

The project swerves into a solemn and reflective vibe with “JOSE’S TEARS” which starts with a sad Spanish guitar solo before we get “FRENA.” The track is a guitar-driven downtempo trap track that is underpinned by Butch Vega’s expressive flow. He raps in Spanish and delivers a solid performance for sure. The track’s title means Brake in English.  Listeners would be in for a surprise as Bucth Vega switches things up with the hypnotic and bouncy “GO WITH THE FLOW” featuring OlaWuskiii and the R&B/trap “CiEN” featuring Efimero. Both tracks are vastly distinct and showcase Butch Vega’s versatility. The final track  “WRiST” has a moody and solemn vibe and comprises sparse drums with soft strings underpinned by melodic flows and vivid storytelling.

 

Notable tracks include the plucky “DiSFRAZ” with its bass-heavy but sparsely arranged drums and playful flows and the hard-hitting posse cut “CAPEALO” featuring Spanish emcees Lizion, Montsy, and Yeiii. The track has the quintessential posse-cut energy with the rappers bringing different styles.

 

In my opinion, The World Wants Different lives up to its title and more. The production is tight, crisp and different while Butch Vega’s knack for penning engaging raps and memorable hooks adds value as well.
