Emerging singer/songwriter/rapper jWondr unveils his new project before.We.move.on, a 10-track project that explores the past, present and future in a straight timeline. The project blends a host of genres ranging from modern/future R&B similar to The Weeknd, dark, moody trap songs with reflective themes reminiscent of Drake, ZillaKami and Night Lovell.
“DND” sets the tone for the project with a statement that underpins jWondr’s intent to be a force by himself. The aptly titled track is built on an ominous and dark atmospheric soundscape with sparse drum arrangements, and finds the artist detailing how he finds peace and solace in a world filled with craziness. Lines like   “I have been cool with no drama/getting over my trauma/staying in touch with my mama/I turn up when I wanna,” underscore what moves him. He does not engage in things that don’t matter, but rather focuses on the bigger picture. “DREAMVILLAIN” continues with the dark theme with a hard-hitting beat built on moody pads and a punchy drum break that adds urgency to the theme. Here, jWondr talks about the dichotomies of life where people would go to the extreme and break from the norm to gain their heart’s desires. Far from being preachy, he also acknowledges his part in this dichotomy by being accountable while taking reformative actions, and also reminding us that being true to oneself and supportive is the best approach. “BLUEPRINT” starts with a wonky riff with trippy textures that evoke solemn moments in life where reality sets in. Lyrically, jWondr digs deep into the theme of appreciation for loved ones and how showing you care goes a long way. “EGOS” is an aptly titled track that tackles the subject matter from a frank standpoint. jWondr assumes the role of a man grappling with his past actions and taking steps forward with lines like “I put all regrets on my shoulders, I’m slowly losing all the weight/allow me to stack up back burner/I need a clear mind to create/We going through phases and closing the doors/We’re not asking why, why, why.” “GHOST” comes in at the end of the first half of the project, and it feels like a break in transmission as we see jWondr transitioning into a new phase. Once again, the production continues with dark and ominous motifs underpinned by the rapper’s offbeat vocalization and bravado-laden bars.
The second half of the project starts with “WAVES,” an emotional response to withering love or heartbreak. The outpour of emotions and vulnerabilities are the highlights on this track, as jWondr takes audiences through the ups and downs of matters of the heart. As the title suggests, the songwriting is akin to the waves of the ocean, where calmness and agitation balance each other out.
The intro to “ALLAGASH” is particularly striking and has a gripping texture that rises to a crescendo as the drums and brooding pads come into play. Here, jWondr continues his soul searching through the wilderness with lines like “I left my heart opened/I feel like you just stole the key” that hit like a mantra. “AGUILA” is built on punchy boombap drums underpinned by ominous textures and ethereal pads that evoke some sort of epiphany with jWondr in a state of clarity. It is sort of like Don’t wait until your water runs dry moment if you ask us.
The project closes out with “STB” and “COBAIN,” which helps bring the emotional journey full circle. The former sees jWondr in his final form as he takes charge of his affairs and cuts loose of the anchors holding him back with lines like
I’ve been feeling this music is a waste of my time/Till I look in the mirror, this shit is for life/We’re not getting discouraged anymore, we gather this courage since 2024.” The latter employs a soulful vocal sample laced with punchy downtempo drums as the foundation for the artist’s reflective songwriting. The title is a slight nod to the grunge legend and the power of self-belief in a cold world where nothing is promised. The overall feel is bright and uplifting, and a great landing from the dark tones that cover most of the tracks on the project.

before.We.move.on is an interesting body of work with several emotional shifts within the tracks, and while jWondr doesn’t necessarily break new grounds, he does wander into an unbeaten path filled with delicate topics that highlight his humanity, his craft and how they are all entangled.
