If you haven’t yet come across any mention of “Kendrick Lamar‘s verse” you must be cut off from society (and good on you, many would like to join you I’m sure). However, if you are involved in tweeting or Facebooking or plainly interacting with other people, then you will know what I am talking about; Kendrick Lamar verse – which you can listen to in this post, about three minutes in, and download after the jump – from Big Sean’s ‘Control (FOH)’ has had the social networks buzzing with reaction. There’s no doubting Kendrick Lamar’s impact since dropping his debut album late last year, with music appealing to both purists and mainstream consumers, and his refreshing approach has him carrying the torch for (without wishing to sound elitist) artistic integrity. Does it come as any surprise than that in ‘Control‘ he calls out every rapper relevant today?

It goes to show the confidence in himself that he’d go and call out the guy who’s song it is he’s featuring on. However, is this verse all hype? I’m not sure: it’s raw, aggressive, and pretty dope, but to be honest I think that it has gotten so much attention because so much of that is missing these days, a daring attack from a popular artist on a whole subculture. Personally for me, Jay Electronica had the better verse, but it just didn’t match the Kendrick Lamar purpose and energy, and that’s what the people wanted. (Interesting to note that Jay recorded his verse months ago, whereas Kendrick Lamar only recorded his on Saturday. I wonder if Jay would have switched it around). No matter what though, it has got people talking, and that’s only good thing.
