If you haven’t been on the internets in the past couple of days, then you missed the release of a new joint from De La Soul! This time, they bring you a socially conscious song that demands your attention to listen, thanks to the assistance of Chuck D, who is featured on the track. This is their latest release since the release of Smell the Da.I.S.Y over the summer.

According to Rolling Stone, the track just so happened to be an ‘accidental anthem to the protesters. In an interview with RS, Trugoy mentions that ‘The People’ was supposed to drop back in June.

“Originally ‘The People’ was supposed to drop in June, around the same time the Chuck D/Hot 97/Rosenberg situation took place. We chose to hold off and not add fuel to any fires,” Trugoy says. “Our next aim was for a Black Friday release. Coincidentally, the Ferguson tragedy took place and now the non-indictment verdict. Somehow this song was destined to be a part of something more than just dropping a joint. We hope it will lend itself to something positive in these difficult times.”

Because this track is a free download, they will be restocking their shelves with new goodies on their site. The proceeds will go to I Love Ferguson, which will be helping out the business owners who have been affected by the events in their communities, as well as All Star Code, a non-profit organization that helps young African-Americans learn computer programming. Trugoy adds that there will be a new DLS album on the way for 2015.

DLS will be leaving the states to head to Australia & Thailand next week. I hope you’ve purchased your tickets already! Here are the dates for when they’re in your area:

[12/12] Melbourne, VIC, AUS – 170 Russell (formerly Billboard) [tickets]
[12/12-14] Meredith, VIC, AUS – Meredith Music Festival [tickets]
[12/19-21] Chon Buri, Thailand – Wonderfruit Festival [tickets]
