New York-born, North Carolina-raised Rapper-Songwriter Charlés caught our ears with his new album VERDE, a 10-track album that is a testament to his decade-plus journey as an artist and his growth as a young man finding his true north. The project sees him teaming up with sound engineers, musicians and producers from the black community emphasizing his contribution to highlight oft-overlooked musicians.  As for the title, it was inspired by Jay-Z‘s The Black Album and The BeatlesWhite Album, and his favourite hue is green.

“Witness” sets the tone for the project with its bright and uplifting theme that underscores Charlés’ resilience and fortitude as an artist. This is followed by the bouncy “It’s not us” with its jersey club drums and pop-infused pads and sees Charlés reflecting on a one-sided love affair and the emotional roller coaster that comes along with it. This is followed by another upbeat track “You Know,” which uses a Brazilian and dance rhythm and explores his journey and personal growth. Both tracks have similar energies and show his vulnerability on different sides of the emotional spectrum. Next is the previously released single “MM OK,” a playful but reflective tune where he shares with audiences the principles that keep him grounded while having an open mind and respect to people who have contrarian views. The track features guitarist Chayton Woods who peppers the track with a rich guitar solo. “StraightTalk” has a smooth guitar lick, warm textures and an undeniable drum groove all underpinned by Charlés’ unapologetic raps and down to Earth demeanour where he cuts to the chase and gives audiences his true nature. The jazzy pianos are punctuated by the rousing drum grooves and prevalent basslines on “Stillona.wav,” but more importantly the positive message here is to not ignore the little things that make up the bigger picture if you catch my drift.

Other notable tunes include the aspirational “Talk Less, Do More,” the horn-driven “Take-A-Picture,” and the eclectic “Greener Pastures.” The tracks traverse a wide variety of topics from seizing the day, chasing one’s dreams and not giving up in the face of adversity. The final track “Wake Up Now” serves as a celebratory anthem and is underpinned by moments of joy as Charlés basks in the very moment he has waited for since he was a kid. He makes a note of the naysayers and fairweather friends who doubted him while paying respect to those who stood by his side through the rough patches. Armed with his smooth melodic, he delivers an extra catchy performance ripe with an “I told you so” attitude and a touch of playfulness.

Overall VERDE is largely bright, upbeat and filled with positive messaging and relatable themes for young adults and anyone trying to find their footing in this unforgiving world. I also like how he doesn’t sound preachy but rather presents the message in a clear, concise and digestible manner.
