After going through a “Pity Party” a few months ago, our favourite Southern California-based singer/songwriter Ainjo returns her new single “If Pretty Was A Contest”. The upbeat track has a playful musical tone with its rich jazzy and lofi pop sounds and sees Ainjo exploring the concept of beauty standards in this day and age of social media intrusion and comparison. Ainjo doesn’t mince her words and gives an unapologetic and candid look at the topic with lines like
“They’re luxury I’m more like thrifting
I’m a bad bitch every other weekend
No facials but I’ve tried Pilates, so maybe you’ll like my body
Wishing I was more petite, so you’d make more room for me”
From the point of insecurity and low self-esteem, she looks at how this constant struggle affects women negatively and how mainstream media often adds fuel to the fire with their biased portrayal of women. The track is a far cry from playing the victim but rather a clarion call for women to look deep, find their strength and ignore societal constraints that try to compartmentalize their true beauty.
