Emerging songwriter/rapper/music producer Zehbrah unveils his newest project FOUR , a 4 track body of work that digs deep into topics such as growth, inner conflict and the unpredictable variables that come with life in general.
The project starts “V Timely,” a reflective piece that dwells on destiny, and fate and coming to terms with how certain things are within and some are beyond one’s control. The soundscape is quite dynamic, and upbeat and it evokes a sense of solemnity. here Zebrah gives us a candid view with lines like “Everything I ever wanted was right inside of me/Now it be like hide and seek to figure out who imma be/Bouta change the timeline, like I’m Victor Timely/Speak like I invented things, but I just been following/What the worlds been offering/As much as I admonish it – still I blend and mimic it” This is followed by the bouncy and heartfelt “F Richards”. The track comprises sad textures and punchy trap drums with an overall melancholic ambiance. The title is a reference to Reed Richard’s son from the Marvel Comics Fantastic Four series. Here, Zebrah explores the ups and downs of an individual who can alter reality and his journey to quell his inner demons. Once again, Zebrah delivers a solid performance ripe with passionate flows and vivid storytelling with lines like “Mama’s out of sight ‘cause she hates my plight/But I see her soul and I see her light/Despite the fact that I know that she taught me right/I only see what’s left in the darkest night.” Besides shedding light on his flaws, he also explores the relationship between him and his parents.
The story continues with the soul-stirring “Doomed” which details the dynamics of friendship between two individuals with similar backgrounds steeped in mysticism and troubles. The soundscape is moody and dark and fits Zebrah’s expressive flow and vivid storytelling. Here, he takes on the role of both characters and runs through their take on the issue. “I know you put your trust in me but I never earned it/Secretly a serpent but I hide behind the mask/Trying to ignore the past, won’t be in your future/Knew it wasn’t gonna last, I remember you asked, are we doomed/I said…yes.” It’s far from a song about blame but rather an open letter from both parties as they attempt to find meaningful closure to a dying friendship.
The final track, “N Radd (I Am Alive),” is inspired by Silver Surfer’s origins. Here, Zebrah leads us into the tale of a mysterious cosmic wanderer who continues to search for his true purpose as he balances power and responsibility. Over a cinematic and rousing synth-driven backdrop, Zebrah brings audiences closer to the action with lines like “Seem those things hide between what is real and want can’t be/ If we hide in this machine/Does that mean that cosmically, I am not an entity/But maybe just a memory of something that sees everything and is at peace/within and without.” Zebrah helps shed light on the cosmic being’s slow progression and journey to finding inner peace as he concludes with the affirmative chorus where he sings ‘I am alive- right now.”
Overall, “FOUR” is a brilliant conceptual body of work that is cohesive, profound and filled with relatable profound themes that leave audiences pondering. From existential themes, self-reflection, and the dynamics of faltering love to personal loss, Zebrah packs a lot of deep themes into this short project. One last thing of note is the balance of subtlety when he references Fantastic Four characters as the backdrop for his stories. If one is not truly familiar with the comics, you might miss that important element of the project.
