mindswimmer – elevation

Chi-town based band Mindswimmer drop their unique brand of lo-fi jazz influenced hip-hop titled “Elevation”. On the record, the band has made clear that they do not sit still in one place for long. on this near 13-minute track, the band explores multiple genres of music, weaving them in and out in a seamless manner. The expansive work reveals the influence of the golden age of hip-hop, while simultaneously paying tribute to the pioneering electronic artists of Düsseldorf (Kraftwerk, Neu!). The band’s ability to improvise so cohesively, while exploring multiple modes of musical expression speaks to the open-mindedness of the players themselves.

Mindswimmers sound is very hard to classify – a source of immense pride for the future jazz tribe from Chicago. On between spaces, the group crafted a mesmerizing ambient tribute to a former collaborator. With the dinner party, the group’s improvised performance at Maggiano’s channeled a trip-hop aesthetic. It also hinted at where their sound was headed.

J U S T Y – Feelings.

Staten Island, New York-based independent singer/songwriter Justy appears on our Bonus Cut section with her video “Feelings”. A soul-drenched record that showcases her unique style that blends rap/spoken word and soul music. The self-directed/ self-edited visual features the Staten Island artists in a span of colorful backdrops at Soho, New York’s The Bombay Bread Bar. Bringing forth a playful visual to match the wit of her single “Feelings.” The visual shows Justy’s uncanny ability to remain original in today’s music and her promising future.
