mindswimmer – elevation

Chi-town based band Mindswimmer drop their unique brand of lo-fi jazz influenced hip-hop titled “Elevation”. On the record, the band has made clear that they do not sit still in one place for long. on this near 13-minute track, the band explores multiple genres of music, weaving them in and out in a seamless manner. The expansive work reveals the influence of the golden age of hip-hop, while simultaneously paying tribute to the pioneering electronic artists of Düsseldorf (Kraftwerk, Neu!). The band’s ability to improvise so cohesively, while exploring multiple modes of musical expression speaks to the open-mindedness of the players themselves.

Mindswimmers sound is very hard to classify – a source of immense pride for the future jazz tribe from Chicago. On between spaces, the group crafted a mesmerizing ambient tribute to a former collaborator. With the dinner party, the group’s improvised performance at Maggiano’s channeled a trip-hop aesthetic. It also hinted at where their sound was headed.
