Uprising rapper/songwriter/singer The Lord Loot caught our ears with his new project entitled Deliverance. The 7 track body of work uses the Greek mythology of Icarus as a theme for his rise to fame on the streets, his fall and eventual turning point.

“Icarus #toofly- intro” sets the tone with a poetry reciting of the tragic tale of Icarus. This is followed by “In Love” where we see The Lord Loot in his bravado mindset and he is at the top of the world, surrounded by money, fast cars and faster women. Over the lush and bass-heavy soundscape, he delivers a melodic-driven flow underpinned by his success in the hustle and being enthralled by money no matter the consequences. “L.S.H.R” starts off with a sample from the classic BoyZ N Da Hood and moves into a solemn piano-driven backdrop with snapping drums. Here, The Lord Loot takes us deep into the urban jungle and details the pros and cons of street life and the need to stay on one’s Ps and Qs at all times. Once more, he is in his element with bravado-driven lines like “You batting average, I’m making smash hits/ You keep striking out -for hating, that’s what your ass gets” and tops it up with a smooth catchy hook to complete the job.

“Still Open” is a reflective track that details the hustle using music as an analogy. The title alludes to The Lord Loot’s never-ending grind mentality and how he makes moves to secure the bag even if he has to defend himself and his territory. This is followed by the sombre pianos of “Treasure” and the aspirational lyrics that implore listeners to make haste while the sun shines. The rapper reminisces on the past and how life could pass one by without achieving anything so he drops a handful of lessons to live by in the form of lines like  For everything, there’s a time and a season/If you hustle, better grind for a reason/You ain’t got all day, bro believe it/Many niggaz I hustle with are no longer breathing”. He wraps it up with a reflective melodic chorus that sees him on the search for that proverbial treasure.

The tracks “Sam’s Prayer Do The Dash” and “Deliverance” are the final records and serve as major turning points. The former samples the classic monologue by Samuel L. Jackson in Pulp Fiction which set the tone for the street-savvy track. The cinematic soundscape is perfect for the fall from grace theme as we follow the life of an individual who went through the trappings of street life. The final track “Deliverance” captures the thoughts of a man trying to find his true purpose and turn his life around. Over the rich synth-pads and punchy drum grooves, The Lord Loot pours his heart with listeners with vulnerable lines like  Prayed so long with no response/Losing my grip, How do I hold on?/How long would the pain go on, my faith is all that I’m leaning on”. The track brings the entire project to a meeting point and shows the rapper’s 180-degree turn to the light.

The Lord Loot makes it a point to share his real-life experience as a former prisoner who did a 10-year bid which he summarizes within the songs. far from glorifying what he did, he opt to give lessons to the younger audience on what they should focus on and not fall victim to the glitz and glamour of street life.
