Indie rock/hip-hop artist SEER SEEKER first popped on our radar with their debut album TO THE CORE earlier this year and now they return with the sophomore project SPELLS AND SECRETS. The 10-track album continues in a similar vein and brings together hard-hitting alternative nu-metal musical compositions with a dash of pyshedelia-trip hop.

“DIVINE LOVE (INTRO)” sets the tone with an enthralling and dark soundscape comprising distorted synths, rousing drums and emotionally driven vocals. This is followed by the first iteration of the title track “SPELLS AND SECRETS (PT.1).” The track fuses cinematic synth pulses with 808-laden trap drums underpinned by gruff emotive vocal performance. As the song suggests, we get a trip into SEER SEEKER’s mind as he begs the question; “Spells and secrets in my mind/ What will I find tonight?.” The tracks so far featured mostly singing while “FRACTALS” is the first track with raw raps. The dark cinematic soundscape is dynamic and eerie and explores the dark crevices of SEER SEEKER’s mind as he battles his demons. Lines “Now the ghost they try to blame me, drive me crazy can’t contain me/ I risk it all /and try to look away/ I see them Fractals/No more running in place/Put myself on different phases, time to call them away.” This is followed by the cryptic “BURN” and the pounding drums of “CHECKMATE.” The former sees SEER SEEKER in introspective mode, while the latter encapsulates his resilience as he pushes through the craziness and never-ending hurdles.

“THE WINTERS” is a stand-out track for its overall sound and approach. The fusion of cinematic synths, edgy sound design and 808-laced drums form the perfect anthemic backdrop for SEER SEEKER’s insightful songwriting. Here, he reflects on the struggles during tough times, especially the winters and how he pulls through with his resilient mind. The second iteration of the title track, “SPELLS AND SECRETS (PT.2)” delivers a spine-chilling backdrop that slowly soars into an engulfing soundscape underpinned by emotionally punchy melodies. Next is “NO SNAKES,” which dives into fake friendships and how he manages to fish them out with his sixth sense. His vocal runs are alluring and emotive and the vivid lyrics are engaging. Lines like “My brother said snakes only come inside your place when the door wide open/don’t let them/ My father keeps the snakes out of place, my mother’s afraid of snakes so my place is genetic” sum it all up.

The project closes with the moody and boundary-raising “NEW PARADIGM” and “NATURE OF REALITY.” Both tracks comprise cinematic production with dynamic arrangements that soar to a plateau. The latter displays SEER SEEKER’s rich melodic style, while the latter is a blend of edgy reflective raps and breathy melodic runs.

Overall, SPELLS AND SECRETS lives up to its name by providing listeners with a blend of relatable themes underpinned with a touch of fantasia, and dystopia aesthetics. The seamless tandem of punk-esque /nu-metal sounds, melodies and rapping is brilliant too and brings something refreshing to the forefront.
