Multifaceted Polish band Sedno are bringing their unique style of instrumentation that blends a wide range of influences ranging from modern electronic, to live jazz/soul with Trance and DnB elements. This is evident in their new project Sprawy, a 6 track body of work that is chock full of engaging and layered sounds.
The first track, “Manifest” is a 6-minute medley piece that is rooted in their live performance roots. The track is bolstered by atmospheric synths, woozy and pulsating bass-driven rhythms, and a rich horn pass. This continues till just before the three-minute mark when the band witch up the format into a distorted bass-synth laden jam with dark cinematic textures that all come together to create raw, pensive music. This is followed by “Józefa,” which starts with a thumping drum groove and slowly builds into a frenzy. The track trails and draws listeners in with its atmospheric vibe and layered instrumentation. The fusion of dark electronic elements with surreal jazz-influenced horns and basslines is what makes the track remarkable. On “Bipolar,” the band continue their style of dark, cryptic music with a spine-chilling jam that evokes trepidation and hope at the same time. The first half looms with the former emotion while the latter half goes into a bright soundscape thus bringing listeners out of the dark cloud into the sun’s rays. There is quite a lot to unpack on this track as listeners are thrust back and forth between the dark and light from start to finish.
Sedno, as a band, truly pushed the envelope on this project. The musicianship and arrangement are top-notch and are a testament to their experience as seasoned live performers and musicians. Tracks like “Vanitas” capture the essence of the 80s with a synth-wave element and unique twist, while “Farm” is a futuristic electronic-jazz piece that comprises distorted bass lines, moody pads, plucky leads, punchy drums and a prevalent horn arrangement. The final track “MCS” shines with its unbridled energy and undeniable tense feeling. The instrumentation here is dynamic, and complex as well. From the rich electric guitar riffs, sizzling synths, driving bass-driven rhythms and overall gripping ambiance.
Overall Sprawy is as experimenatl as they come and offers listeners something refreshing and different.
