Eclectic songwriter/singer okay(K)  returns with his new project blessed anderson – please, awake, a 7 track conceptual project that is inspired by famous director Wes Anderson.  okay(K) embodies the eccentric and distinctive styles popularised by the director and takes audiences on a journey through the unknown.

The first two tracks “gravity” and “bedroom” set the tone with their distinct pop sounds and self-reflective themes. “gravity” is anchored on rich bright guitar plucks, punchy drums and soothing melodic sample chops underpinned by okay(K)’s nasally vocal runs and expressive performance. “bedroom” dives into the artist’s mind as he details his fears and hopes while reminiscing in his bedroom. The track is short but the guitar arrangement is lush and well-crafted. On “quasi”, okay(K) talks about the detractors and the dynamics of life and the never-ending inner struggles that a young black man faces. Here, he employs a playful and somewhat nonchalant melodic run that sounds off-beat at certain times. Next is “make believe”, a track comprising ethereal pads and a bare-bones drum groove with an overall dreamy and atmospheric vibe. Once again, okay(K) uses some interesting metaphors and song imagery to bring his dreams to life for audiences. His way of framing things is quite distinct and his overly expressive performance is the icing on the cake. The fun continues with  “roadtrip”, a blend of acoustic guitar licks with punchy trap drums underpinned by okay(K)’s playful vocal runs and engaging storytelling. Here, he takes us on a journey as he moves through some uncharted part of the world with his girl and the many characters they meet and new experiences they will enjoy.

The last two tracks “adorable” and “lethargic” give audiences some things to ponder as okay(K)  continues to find himself in this unpredictable world.  “adorable” has a hopeful and bright soundscape comprising lush guitars, soft hushed drums and sees the singer finding beauty in the little things despite the craziness around him. On “lethargic”, he brings the project to a close with a relatable and poignant tale of seizing the day and basking at the moment because time passes by regardless.

While blessed anderson – please, awake, is an ambitious body of work, it doesn’t try to break the mould but rather gives audiences a familiar feeling in a new and somewhat refreshing manner.
