“Tell Cupid he is late, I have been waiting for a while for his arrows of fate…” are the opening lines from South London rapper Mr Ekow‘s love laden record “Heart of the Matter”. The laid back soulful record is a brilliant display of down to Earth emotions regarding love, St Valentine’s day and everything regarding matters of the heart. He also gets real about his own struggle to find love, while attempting to redefine it.

The Nathan Prospect produced song is a smooth, jazzy cut that fits Mr Ekow’s laid back flow and insightful lyrics. The visuals which was shot on the the rooftops of his hometown Croydon is simple and shows the emcee in his performing element.

The Croydon rapper shares some of his thoughts on making the song:

It’s funny, it turned out to be way more personal than I originally intended. It’s crazy reaching your mid-twenties and seeing people around you start to settle down and get married etc. There’s something really powerful about two people saying, “I want to do this life with you”… and when you haven’t experienced that yourself it can leave you scratching your head. Add to that, the barrage of love stories we’re fed through the media and it feels like something isn’t quite adding up. This song was a chance for me to explore what’s gone wrong along the equation and figure out whether our current definition of love has a part to play.”

BIO: Growing up in Croydon as a 90s baby, he was strongly influenced by the tail end of Golden Era Hip Hop and the ascent of UK grime and rap. The end result is a versatile, jazzy and lyrically sharp rapper who loves to get a crowd vibing.
