Three Flaves is the latest mixtape from Luccini Sweets, Keysuna and Mystraw who have joined forces to bring us a 19-track body of work filled with experimental soulful sounds. The project is a blend of a handful of genres with neo-soul and lofi hiphop being the core foundations. It is a balanced mix of instrumentals with vocal-assisted tracks that feature a wide range of artists.

The project begins with “Wastelanders” an instrumental medley with different beats that flow seamlessly into each other. The first part has a funk-psychedelic vibe with funk-slop textures and snapping drums. This slowly progresses into the second half where a rich plucky guitar synth comes into play and lively drums help raise the ante a tad bit before it closes out with a neo-soul chord riff. This is followed by “Stayin”,  a soulful summer vibe with an instrumentation that is layered and dynamic while the vocal runs are expressive and the lyrics detail the comforting feelings of being in the arms of that special someone. Each artist brings their respective styles to the forefront and channels their true emotions over the atmospheric soundscape. Next is “Overthinkin”, an experimenatl neo-soul track with lofi hip-hop leanings underpinned by soft sultry vocal runs and heartfelt songwriting that explore soul-searching experiences while  “trainin deey”, a lofi instrumental comprises plucky synth arrangements, prevalent basslines and snapping drum grooves driven. In “Smooth Sailing (Part II)”, we are gifted a laidback and chilled track that exudes warmth and a bit of reflection. The drums here are punchy while the layered synths and moody pads all come together like white on rice.

In “Up to Speed”, Luccini Sweets flexes their vocal range with an engaging vocal performance that blends airy and layered harmonizations with a subtle effect that adds dynamics to the track. “Inner Stellar Master” sounds like a future funk/soul jam ripe with sparse drum grooves, and ethereal textures underpinned by lilting vocal runs.“Sirens” brings together Sakiiba and James Izcray and together they create an edgy and experimenatl neo-soul piece that showcases relatable songwriting and expressive vocal performances. “Rise Up” is the celebratory and aspirational anthem we need in these crazy times. The message here is timeless and poignant plus the delivery is pure gold if you look at it from an aesthetic viewpoint. The production has a retro-soul vibe with a modern twist that lovers of the genre can vibe to.

Tracks like  “Dat Walk” feature Luccini Sweets, “AUTOMATISM” and “I Mean It” serves as testament to the collective’s knack for pushing their musical boundaries and pushing beyond their comfort zone.  “AUTOMATISM” is dynamic and cinematic and uses extensive sound mixing techniques that enhance the rich vocals, “I Mean It” delivers a classic lofi-soul bounce with its warm Rhodes and alluring melodies while  “Dat Walk” strays from the norm with its plucky funk-laden arrangement and expressive vocal performances.

The final section includes a trifecta of solid tracks that continue to showcase the collective’s extensive work behind the boards. “In The Mood” featuring Keysuna is a brilliant sublime jam that helps set the mood with its uplifting aura while  “Big Moves” featuring Mystraw and  Luccini Sweets uses downtempo trap-soul grooves with pulsating basslines underpinned by melodic raps from the artists. The last track “Black Sheepness” brings back Keysuna and the result is a solemn and reflective jam that dives into the dark crevices of the human mind as it tries to find the true purpose of life. Other notable tracks include the Dilla-esque soulful piece “Need 4”, the atmospheric “About: Blank”, the spacey jazz-infused “Mo Betta blues (Armstrong)” and the sublime guitar-laden “Too Good” which dives into self-love and healing.

In the end, Three Flaves is a project one can easily get into and even on shuffle mode, you are bound to be entertained from start to finish.
