Kid With The Light is a musical project that began as a series of poems that evolved into songs. The lyrics were inspired by real-life issues ranging from turbulent relationships, internal conflicts and the journey to self-awareness.
The first track, “Liquid Dome,” is a no-holds-barred look at life and taking accountability of one’s situation. Over a dark cinematic backdrop with thumping drums, the rapper reflects on his past with regret before breaking out of the doldrums and taking charge of his life. The overall feel is anthemic, and the underlying mantra is a call to action for everyone going through emotional isolation.
“Stopwatch” begins with a gripping violin riff that rises into an explosive punch with a drop and cinematic brass stabs. Once again, Kid With The Light dives into the topic with an energetic voice filled with passion. The track has an interesting progression that reaches a crescendo on the chorus section and keeps listeners locked in from start to finish.
The next track, “Three Truths,” is inspired by a period of dark times where their mental health was at its lowest. The production is solemn and warm and sees Kind With the Light acknowledging his reality and mapping out the steps to recovery. The track underscores the severe effects of depression, isolation and self-denial while showing vulnerability and the ability to push through it all by taking charge of one’s affairs through open communication.
“Dark Passenger” serves as the most personal track on this list, as Kid With The Light states. It explores the delicate issue of self-harm and suicidal thoughts with a touch of paranoia. The lyrics touch on a side of dark emotions most are afraid to talk about and highlight the internal struggles most folks face as they try to find some semblance of hope in a dark place.
The production is top-notch and boasts brooding textures with classical elements laced with punchy drums.
“Boxed In is the bridge” is a deep dive into alcohol dependency and the feeling of being misunderstood, and from the jump it takes listeners deep into the issue with lines like
“I drink when I’m sad, drink when I’m hap-py
Drink when fear takes over and tries to slap-me
Spent months getting my music out-there
Too raw, too emotional, don’t fit in the box-here”
The production continues in the same vein as previous tracks, fusing brooding atmospheric textures with classical sounds and hard-hitting hip-hop drums.
