Rising rapper/songwriter Kentron ClutchAF shares his new album da aTRAPulant Conception which serves as his fourth full-length project since he started his music career in 2019. The project is a 12-track body of work that captures the spirit of cinematic trap sounds and themes that center on friendship, the ups and downs of street life and a little bit of vulnerability.

“Bag 2 Chase” is the opening record and it’s an aspirational tune that details Kentron’s go-getter mentality. Over a folk-infused flute trap backdrop, he breaks down his work ethic with much gusto. Armed with a commanding flow and intentional lines like “Steady trapping till it happen, ama get my big break anyday/Scale say I’m getting bigger how Sway when I’m moving plenty weight”, Kentron shows us how he stands on business. Next is “beginnin of da ENDtro”, a story-telling tune made up of dark and cinematic textures underpinned by Kentron’s bravado-driven raps and impassioned flow. On, “No Frontin” Kentron gets into the zone and delivers a memorable hook followed by street-savvy verses that center on being true and weary of the detractors and traitors.

“Pea Oh Pea Freestyle” is a mid-tempo 808-laden track that sees Kentron in his element and once again he reminds us that he is all about making the right moves and avoiding distractions. This is followed by “u ain no steppa”, which starts with a playful hook and unapologetic lines like “‘Cause a steppa don’t type ‘bout it-type ‘bout it/ And a steppa don’t talk ‘bout it-talk ‘bout it” where he takes shots at fake internet gangsters and wanna-be tough guys who live the fairy tale life. “AcXident” has a video-game-infused synth and thick drums underpinned by Kentron’s show of pure masculine frame. Here, he details his various escapades with women and it’s pretty graphic. Joining him on the track is 10 SLANTZ who adds his own story on the last verse. “Everytime She Ride” is a switch from the bravado theme as Kentron steps up to bat and convinces a lady that she is with the wrong man. Over a soulful and dreamy backdrop, Kentron delivers slick lines that might change her mind. The next track “Interrogated In Raids” has a cinematic soundscape and vivid storytelling that explores the ups and downs of finding success in this unforgiving world.

“Friends by Drastikk910” is a collaboration between Kentron and Drastikk910 and together they deliver a smooth melody-laced performance ripe with insightful bars about their loss, betrayal and the essence of having true friends in one’s circle. The hook recycles the classic Whodini track “Friends” and the verses are quite relatable and engaging. “Infatuated” is an anthemic track ripe with edgy and punchy drums with a pitched-up choral sample and explores Kentron’s stint on the streets and how he weaves his experiences with the music business. Next is “Da Blinds On Fire”, a scenic and sombre tune made up of a haunting vocal sample that forms the perfect canvass for Kentron’s engaging storytelling that centers on his experiences in the concrete jungle where predators are on the prowl. The project closes out with “No Frontin- Remix” and he brings in Mula910 who adds a stylish and melodic performance to the track.

Overall, da aTRAPulant Conception is as cohesive as a tightly knit cardigan. The soundscape stays true to the trap aesthetics and Kentron’s commanding vocals and knack for painting gripping images is undeniable.
