The title track “Redbud” sounds like the theme for a mid-90s tv show and features soul-stirring strings with folkish aesthetics and an overall warm pad with hushed grooves. This is all underpinned by Gina’s soft vocal runs that gently pepper the track. The result is a blissful and nostalgia-inducing piece. Next up is the groovy jazz-soul offering “Florida Ave,” a piano-driven piece that is aced with a plucky bass riff, and a rich guitar pass that adds a touch of reflective element into the mix. I must add, that the progressive arrangement takes the cake as audiences are provided with a plethora of sounds that enchant and thrill the ears. This is followed by the heartfelt “Try Again Tomorrow” which dives into the topic of listlessness and the domino effects it has within us and the people around us. It also touches on the idea of taking things one step at a time and avoiding rushing into the craziness of the world. The songwriting is lucid and details a relatable situation that we all can understand. Gina’s vocals have a uniquely expressive and ear worm texture that throws listeners into the mix and we are suddenly inserted in her shoes in the metaphorical sense. “East Colorado” evokes raw neo-soul energy and captures the early 2000s soul tracks we love and cherish. The track digs deep into the concept of home, love and the pain of pining for that special someone who unfortunately is far away. The final tracks, the warm “Canyons” and “The in Between” with their retro-soul vibes all come together perfectly marrying rich and layered instrumentation with sublime vocal runs that capture our hearts.
Once again, the interlocking of vocals and instrumentation is one of the core tenets of the band. One would notice how these two things play off each other, hence audiences have the pleasure of enjoying Gina’s commanding but laidback vocals and the instrument solos that permeate different parts of the project.
