The legendary producer DJ Premier teams up with the equally legendary lyricist Nas for “Beat Breaks” which is part of the newly released Mass Appeal sponsored Hip Hop 50: The Soundtrack Volume 1. The nostalgic and hard-hitting record was teased online by Preem a short while ago and everyone including myself lost their minds. The title is more than apt and pays homage to the backbone of hip-hop with crunchy drums and cinematic textures laced with classic vocal scratching by Preem. Nas is coming off his last release Magic with Hit-Boy, and he is still in rare form with his characteristic rhyme schemes and vivid lyrics. As expected, he leaves nothing to spare as he takes listeners back to the genesis and shows his knowledge and love for the culture.

The duo has never missed a pep in their step and “Beat Breaks” is another gem that reminds us that true hip-hop is very much alive and kicking.

With his first proper project since the release of Gang Starr’s historic and chart-topping, One Of The Best Yet, DJ Premier’s new project celebrates the sound of Hip-Hop’s pre-eminent producer and he tapped a star-studded list of esteemed guests for DJ Premier: Hip Hop 50 Volume 1which includes appearances from Nas, Lil Wayne, Run The Jewels, Joey Bada$$, Remy Ma, Rapsody and Slick Rick.

The Hip Hop 50 Soundtrack will encompass a series of 10 EPs of all newly released music that will bring together the industry’s most highly regarded producers who are defining the landscape of music and culture in celebration of 50 years of Hip Hop. Following DJ Premier’s EP release, fans can look forward to new music curated by Swizz Beatz, Mustard, The-Dream, Mike Will Made It, No I.D., Hit-Boy, Take A Daytrip and Tainy.

The entire series will be distributed via Mass Appeal’s new deal with The Orchard. Bringing together some of the biggest names in Hip Hop, this project will further solidify the #HipHop50 movement as it not only captures 50 years of culture but will also honor some of the latest and greatest to do it. A portion of all #HipHop50 proceeds will be donated to various charitable organizations, including the Universal Hip Hop Museum set to open its doors in 2024.
