Chezale is a singer/songwriter/emcee out of Arizona, originally from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania whose style of socially conscious rap mixed with a plethora of distinct sounds caught our ears. As a true student of the game, she takes elements from 90s hip-hop, R&B and a modern-day edge wrapped in her own distinct flavor to complete the mission. Her latest release “Dear Ancestors” is an anthemic tribute to her roots and a heartfelt open adulation-filled letter of praise, appreciation and acknowledgment of Chezale’s cultural ancestry and lineage, both near and distant. Backed by an epic and cinematic soundscape made up of mantra-like vocal chants, thumping drums and triumphant stabs, Chezale takes listeners on a spiritual journey and enlightens them along the way. Far from being preachy, she aims to spark up and wake us up with lines like I can never joke about it, walk a mile in their shoes but is you really  ’bout it?/ Could you live the life they lived, I really doubt it, ignorance is bliss and it’s getting kinda crowded” while paying homage to black historical figures ranging from Angela Davis, Harriet Tubman, Assatta Shakur all the way to African queens who helped pave the way directly and indirectly.

The song also comes with a brilliant and motif-driven video that captures Chezale’s thoughts in colour. The use of performance shots, clips and expressive choreography also accentuates the message to a higher realm.
