Uprising musician/instrumentalist Big Vezy delivers his new project Steady Growth to our earshot. The seven-track body of work is a testament to the artist’s trials and tribulations and his willpower to endure it all. The aptly titled project is rich in musical tapestry which blends a handful of genres with a hip-hop focus.

The project kicks off with “Mustard Seed”, a piece that helps usher listeners in with a welcoming feel. The dreamy keys are complemented by a pulsating bassline that pads the drum groove while the airy vocal samples help introduce that heartfelt and soothing element into the mix. He then switches into a Dilla-esque piece with “Things Take Time”. He starts it with a vocal sample that talks about the concept of patience before the warm keys come into play. The drum grooves are staggered and choppy and fit the moody textures with an overall comforting feel.

On “Morning Dew (Interlude)”, Big Vezy employs a mix of lush piano arrangements with airy choral voices and soft drums to create an atmospheric backdrop. I love the simplicity in the arrangement and subtle chord changes as well. The fun continues with this neo-soul-infused piece titled “PromiseLand”. He uses rich acoustic guitar plucks, dusty keys and punchy drums to deliver this retro-tinged piece that is reminiscent of soul tracks from the early to mid-2000s. The nostalgic aesthetic is undeniable and quite endearing and the chorus has an uplifting and inspirational vibe too. “S.U.N” is quite a change from the previous tunes as Big Vezy taps into the Afrobeats genre. The drum grooves have a solid bounce and he peppers the entire track with soul-stirring synths, warm pads and a distorted melodic vocal to match. The project closes out with the Gospel-inspired “Blessings” and the introspective title track “Steady Growth”. Both tracks are a testament to Big Vezy’s versatility and ability to craft a wide range of soundscapes to fit the mood.

Overall Steady Growth, is a cohesive and seamless piece of art that tells a story of hope, pain, dreams and the many hurdles one has to face. It’s relatable, musically rich, layered and engaging from start to finish.
