Being a mother has to be a tough job, especially for moms raising kids in the hip-hop community. After all, many of the songs we listen to on a daily basis don’t paint women in the best light.

There is one woman, though, who is held above all others in this art form – that of mother.

Today, we will be looking at the tracks rappers have made and dedicated to their mothers. We do this to celebrate Mother’s Day in this special edition of Know Your History.

We start off the show with an inspiration clip from rapper / actor Common. He talks about the important things his mother instilled in him throughout his life. He is addressing an audience and talking about the memoir he wrote. One of the interesting things about the book is that his mother writes part of it as well and gives us some extra insight about her son.

Chase March then spins songs from 2Pac, Kanye West, Masta Ace, and Saigon. These rappers wear their hearts on their sleeves with their open and honest songwriting about their mothers.

You will also hear some rare interview clips from the artists and their mothers. It’s a fitting tribute for Mother’s Day!

To all the mothers out there, keep doing your thing. You have a very important job and we certainly respect all that you do.

Happy Mother’s Day!
