Taylor Kelly, a Philly-based multi-talented singer, songwriter, and composer is bringing her genre-blending style to the forefront with an experimental twist. With a Bachelor’s Degree in Professional Music and more than ten thousand hours clocked with her band, Taylor has become a staple in the Philadelphia music scene. She already has four albums and an EP under her belt. Her latest EP The Spins is a 6 track body of work that anchored on the theme of self-containment. As a self-composed, self-produced project, Taylor brings listeners deep into her world with unfiltered emotions and candid songwriting. She is currently preparing for an upcoming tour from July 25 – August 17.
The first track “Sometimes” starts with Taylor’s airy vocals drenched in parallel effects which adds a psychedelic feel and draws audiences into the mix of the action. The rich piano arrangement soars to a plateau as her vocals rise. The track then switches into a soulful guitar-laden piece that digs deep into self-doubt and the negative effects of overanalyzing situations. Lines like “Peak and valleys, don’t think I can call the shots no more/Why is it with me feel so good but still feel so small” show how deep the rabbit hole can get. This is followed by “Take Me”, comprising of head-nodding drum breaks, anthemic horn passes and a brooding texture underpinned by Taylor’s rich melodic runs and outpour of emotions. here, she seeks to fly away with that special someone to drown away her sorrows. Next is the previously released single “Fit In” which tackles the singer’s battle with OCD. Inspired by true life experiences and being diagnosed with the condition, Taylor puts her feelings on wax and explores the several intrusive thoughts and swirling emotions that almost make it impossible to live a normal life. The track has an overwhelmingly sombre feel and serves as an escape for Taylor. This leads to “Ain’t it Funny”, a heartfelt story-driven track that follows Taylor as she deals with self-confidence, mental health and dining that much-needed inner strength to find her true North. The production here is layered and sublime and Taylor’s lilting vocal tones take the cake. “Attention” is a mellow reflective track that deals with reciprocity in a relationship and sees Taylor yearning for attention from her lover with the lines “I just want attention but only from you/Something about you makes me feel cool/Some kind of mystery turns me on”.
The final track “The Spins” helps bring the project to a close with a blend of retro soul elements comprising slick soulful chords, ethereal textures with punchy drum grooves underpinned by soul-stirring melodic runs from the singer. She runs through various events and experiences that shaped her worldview and comes to the realization that she is still learning and growing.
The Spins (EP) takes audiences on an emotional rollercoaster with edgy and relatable songwriting. Taylor doesn’t shy away from vulnerability which I must say is her strength and that is what makes the EP potent.
