Uprising artist Slayk shares his new effort Sex Drugs Rock ‘N’ Roll, which is a 9-track project that showcases the versatility of emo rap with punk aesthetics and heartfelt melodic performances. Slayk is quite dedicated and gives listeners an interesting glimpse into his thoughts, his lifestyle and more over the course of 27 minutes.

Sex Drugs Rock ‘N’ Roll starts with “Hero”, an anthemic track that ushers listeners into Slayk’s world and the hurdles he has to face. From inner demons, fake friends and the daily grind to reach the apex, he pours his thoughts on wax with lines like “So let me set the record straight just for a minute/you say you understand me but somehow  I still feel offended/and when I get the chance I know I blow right out through the ceiling, ‘cause you ain’t my man if you ain’t feeling how I’m feeling”. This is followed by “Sex and Drugs”, a smooth sombre guitar-driven record that dives into these two vices that can totally destroy a man. Armed with his laidback melodic vocals, he details how these two things affect him as he uses them as metaphors for a certain lady and the grip she has on him. In, “99”, Slayk gets into his element and delivers an energetic and fiery performance ripe with pure bravado and gusto over the bell synths and thick 808 kick drums laid before him. He holds nothing back and sends warnings and darts toward the opposition, snakes and women who try to cash grab from his resources. He definitely has no love for them and voices his concerns with no apologies.

“Hit List” starts with a soulful and solemn string and guitar riff before the drums come into play. Here, Slayk employs a laidback and nonchalant melodic drawl ripe with bravado raps that center on his rockstar lifestyle that involves exquisite spots and fast women. As the title suggests, he is a sniper killing everyone on his hit list. “Lois Lane” has a cinematic production that sounds like something from an action movie and it’s quite layered with solemn keys, sombre guitar plucks and dark pads with downtempo trap drums. Slayk is in his element as he makes moves with lines like “I feel like Superman and ain’t no Lois Lane in my night plan”.  Next up is the rousing and hard-hitting “Moshpit Party” where the energy switches up a bit. Slayk embodies the spirit of the proverbial rock star in the mosh pit doing what he likes and he is not trying to please anyone. “R.I.P(Wasted)” is a solemn and reflective track composed of sombre guitars and sad pads and sees the rapper reflecting on his lifestyle and the many deceased rap legends characters whom he looked up to. He acknowledges his failings and the detrimental effects of his lifestyle but he finds it hard to stop.

The project closes out with “Diary” and “Hex”, two tracks that showcase Slayk’s nonconformist style and knack for taking emo-rap into another plateau with his distinct songwriting. The former is an emo-trap record that sees Slayk reflecting on love and the emotions that come after the loss. He pours his heart on wax and how he is ready to get this love or else he might die while the latter focuses on a steamy session with an unknown lady. The production here is quite experimental and uses a weird synth pad and off-kilter aural effects that make it sound off-balance at certain parts.

Overall, Sex Drugs Rock ‘N’ Roll delivers what it says in the title. Listeners are drawn deep into the mix of the action. We see him having the time of his life and we also see him drowning in the doldrums as he battles his inner demons.
