Producer/songwriter/singer RUTH NOSTALGIA drops his new 10-track album Poetry In Motion. This serves as a follow-up to his previous effort LOURVE and once again its a showcase of his abilities to rap, record, produce and mix all his works.
“Poetry In Motion” lives up to its title as RUTH NOSTALGIA proceeds to display his lyrical proficiency over a drumless soundscape. The self-produced track comprises chopped soulful vocal samples with warm keys and ethereal pads that evoke feelings of nostalgia. Here, the rapper delivers a tandem of non-sequiturs with little nuggets like “If you hot make a swish, close your eyes make a wish/Pray you ain’t on the bench/Pray the shots you take is nothing but net.” Next is “All The Way,” which flips a classic R&B sample into a downtempo modern rap cut. The recurring vocals create a mantra-like feeling while RUTH NOSTALGIA delivers bravado-driven verses. This leads to “Wet” and “Cry,” two tracks with similar vibes. The former ventures into the downtempo R&B territory with filtered vocal samples while the latter has a lofi-soul approach with an Alchemist-type vibe. Both tracks however, showcases RUTH NOSTALGIA’s stream-of-consciousness style of writing with lines like “Sometimes I think that maybe bliss is dead/Until I reconnect, we should let flight of steps/ Why fly when I can fight instead?”
The project continues with various of sample flips and styles but is still rooted in the experimental and off-kilter style, NOSTALGIA has presented. “Check” is a glitchy vocal-driven track anchored on go-getter sensibilities, “Ball In Your Court” takes us to the 90s with its breezy sounds , while “Sail” blends lofi-jazz textures to create a relaxing ambiance underpinned by laidback and somewhat lackadaisical rapping. Other interesting tracks include “Amen” and “Dream,” a pair of tracks that really showcase RUTH NOSTALGIA’s production prowess. I must add, he is able to take the most unexpected samples and turn them into something refreshing. “Amen” has a solemn and reflective feel that emanates from how he chopped up the vocal samples while “Dream” has a bright and introspective vibe that comes from the Gospel-tinged samples. The final track “Fast” has a bittersweet energy and helps bring the project to a close. RUTH NOSTALGIA takes listeners on an emotional journey with his off-kilter songwriting and storytelling.
Overall Poetry In Motion, is a worthy follow-up to his previous album LOUVRE. One can say he is fully hands-on with the music as he handles all the production and vocal duties with no assists. The flow can be a bit repetitive at times but the expressive storytelling, wit and unfiltered rhymes often make up for the minor shortcomings.
