Producer/songwriter/singer RUTH NOSTALGIA releases his latest project Louvre, a 7 track project that is mostly instrumentals with a couple of vocal-driven tracks wedged between. The self-produced track showcases RUTH NOSTALGIA’s love for soul samples and his somewhat experimental production style.
The first track “Symone,” has a nice groove, off-beat melodic hums and moody synths punctuated by soulful samples and soft drums.“Puppy Love” is a Laidback tune comprising atmospheric sample chops, screwed vocals and downtempo drums with hushed vibes. Here, RUTH NOSTALGIA shares his thoughts on blossoming love with a certain woman. His expressive flow has a lackadaisical tone, but the songwriting is graphic. Lines like “sugar-free Ice T, chasing pussy like P, beat it in a white beater but I ain’t no wife beater, put a smile on Shiva…” underpin his fluid and non-sequitur infused style. “Louvre” is an instrumental-only track. The production has that early Kanye pitched-up vocal sample chop vibe. It evokes nostalgia and bittersweet moments. The arrangement is dynamic and the high points are where the bridge comes in and the melodies switch up to create a slightly different ambiance before returning to the original form.
“Sweet” continues the love and emotional theme of the project with its sublime and almost ethereal texture. The production is layered with a main vocal sample chop that plays throughout while the groove sets the punchiness. There are subtle musical elements that help enhance the sonics too, like RUTH NOSTALGIA’s distorted vocal performance that is mixed in a way that sounds like it’s drowned out underneath the beat. The next track “Honeydew” is another soulful beat that is anchored on a recurring vocal sample repeating the title in a mantra-like fashion. The backdrop has a nostalgia-inducing vibe with a summer element as well. The drums are not so punchy but groovy enough to keep listeners’ heads nodding.
The project closes out with “Cellulite” and “Android 18,” two tracks that help bring it full circle. The former has a guitar-like riff that flows in and out alongside a short vocal sample overlaid on soft drums, while the latter is a vocal-driven track that showcases RUTH NOSTALGIA’s expressive singing. The beat here is anchored on a rich vocal sample that is reminiscent of a Motown classic, a mid-tempo drum loop and lofi special effects that give it a cinematic aesthetic.
Overall, I say one should not expect the usual on this project as Louvre, provides something different from the norm and I dare say, a refreshing taste for your palette.
