1520 Sedgwick Avenue in the Bronx, New York has been long-considered to be the birthplace of hip-hop, and it was recently honored by the city’s Municipal Art Society and non-profit organization City Lore for its cultural contribution to New York City.

The location is one of six locations that has designated to honor.

We believe that cultural diversity is a positive social value to be protected and encouraged; that authentic democracy requires active participation in cultural life, not just passive consumption of cultural products; and that our cultural heritage is a resource for improving our quality of life” states City Lore’s website.

In the past few years, 1520 Sedgwick Avenue was in danger of being lost forever. But, in 2007, was declared a historic and cultural landmark.

In August 11th, 1973, DJ Kool Herc threw the first hip-hop party at the building’s basement recreation room. He was one of the main advocates in helping preserve the landmark.

1520 Sedgwick Avenue is a 100-unit apartment building.
