Multi-talented Canadian artist Kojo Kay‘s musical path strays into uncharted regions. Fusing cloud rap and experimental R&B, Kojo Kay delivers something different and unique, as he also brings awareness to his Ugandan and Ghanaian roots. His latest release THIS DOESN’T FEEL GOOD BEING STUCK HERE IN THE SAME SPOT is a 5-track self-produced EP that highlights his well-rounded musicianship.
The EP serves as the fourth body of work and precedes his debut mixtape TONEBOW. Aiming to give fans a taste of what he has been planning, Kojo Kay pulls no brakes as he is fully hands-on with the music, but he also brings on board Juno Award-winning engineer Jamie Kuse on the entire project. The EP opens with the surreal “THE BOYS ALL WENT TO JUPITER,” which explores flaws, past mistakes and the process of redemption. Against a brooding, atmospheric backdrop, Kojo Kay delivers an off-kilter melodic performance underpinned by reflective lyrics. The next track, “UNDERWATER FIRE,” is a collaboration with Mazelfyre, which continues the surreal motifs. Here, the artists explore complex emotions as it unravels under life’s circumstances. The production is cinematic, layered and progressive, which lends its strengths to the singer’s commanding and expressive vocalizations. Joining him on the track is fellow Canadian alternative artist Mazelfyre, who adds a siren-like vocal run on the track, and the result is an ethereal piece that grips the soul. This leads into the anthemic track“THE HUMMINGBIRD TOLD ME IT’S ALL GONNA BE ALRIGHT SO I GUESS IT REALLY WILL BE SO…” which dives into gradual change. The track is a genre-bending piece that fuses future R&B with dark contemporary pop and electronic aesthetics. The production is airy, ethereal and brooding, which adds weight to Kojo Kay’s reflective lyrics that explore the never-ending pressures of life. From self-doubt, helplessness and sadness, Kojo Kay runs through the emotions with raw intensity and finally finds his true purpose by turning the pain into a propulsive force.

The next set of tracks follows Kojo Kay’s transformative journey as he reconciles his shortcomings with mental clarity. “OVERTURE TO SOMEWHERE” opens the floodgates of emotional growth, and we find the artist in his renewed state. Over an upbeat backdorp comprising ethereal keys and distorted synths, he shows listeners his newfound inspiration with a focus on being true to himself. The final track, “BREAK JOHNNY,” goes into solemn mode and highlights Kojo Kay’s perseverance and determination to follow the course despite the setbacks. The lyrics are heartfelt and touch on pain and loss, but most importantly, his inner strength. The beat is sparse, dark and brooding, while his airy vocals cut through the mix with an indelible emotional punchiness.
Overall, THIS DOESN’T FEEL GOOD BEING STUCK HERE IN THE SAME SPOT plays like a linear story with Kojo Kay as the main character going through emotions and experiences that lead to self-awareness.
