Producer/rapper/songwriter Gengis Don shares the second instalment of his collection of songs culled from his IG reels. The aptly titled IG’s Most Wanted 2 is a 9-track body of work that explores love, economic downturns, friendship, work ethic and paternal love among other things.

The opening record “Hold You Down” is a mellow and soulful adulation-filled track that sees Gengis Don assuring his significant other that he will hold her down and be there for her. The use of dreamy keys, warm pads, a sing-songy flow and spoken word mirrors the class Motown love ballads with a modern twist. “Fuck Your Ego” is a downtempo soul-trap jam that starts with a screwed vocal that acts as the hook and sees Gengis reflecting on his life and the experiences he has had with people of all backgrounds. As the hook says, it’s all about checking the ego at the door and being true to oneself at all times. “Games” is a playful piece that employs jazz samples with hushed drum grooves and spoken word-inspired vocal performance. The storytelling is quite vivid and relatable as he brings us close to the action where he tries to convince a lady that he is the right man for her. “Please Believe Me” is an aspiration tune that dives into Gengis’ humble beginning and the many trials and tribulations he faced along the way. The track is less than 2 minutes in length but it’s more than enough to get the message across as Gengis wastes no time in letting folks know that he is not here to horse around. The follow-up track “Are You Stupid” is a mellow downtempo track ripe with melancholic pads and snapping drum grooves. Gengis leads the charge with his impassioned flow and unapologetic lyricism while vocalist Malaya peppers the track with her rich and sultry melodic runs.

“Get Mine” is Gengis’ go-getter anthem and rightfully so as the rapper gets into his element with an unapologetic demeanour and a reminder that he is out to get what he deserves. “Capitalism” is an insightful piece that taps into the real-time issues we are facing today and it features Saxophonist Marcus Strickland. Backed by jazz-infused elements and head-nodding grooves, Marcus delivers a playful melodic performance ripe with reassuring lines that implore us to be grateful for all the bills being paid and how we should find a way to stay happy in these stressful times. “Slow Down” has a retro experimental R&B vibe and explores Gengis’ journey in the music industry and how from the outside looking in, it’s not really what it looks like. He knows it’s not all rosy and reminds us to slow down and take it one step at a time. The final song “Song To My Father” is a tribute to his father and it’s a heartfelt piece that shows the rapper’s vulnerable side. He pours his heart on wax with much gusto and shares with listeners the many lessons his father left him and how he has to proceed with life without him.

Overall, IG’s Most Wanted 2 is a two-pronged showcase of skill for Gengis Don who produced the entire project. Besides writing the songs, he also employs a wide array of production techniques that help move the stories forward.
