Chicana singer/songwriter Emma Negrete makes her entry on our site with the visuals of her new single “Dreams and Dryspells”. The record serves as her first release since going independent and she is now fully hands-on with her career. The track has a blend of modern R&B with afro-fusion elements in the mix. Here Emma delivers a sultry and sensual performance ripe with eargasmic melodic runs and gripping lyrics that explore the mind games played by someone who made them feel the right way until they vanished. The track plays on the double meaning of “Dryspells” and the exhilaration of when someone you’ve been entangled with starts playing games and the communication runs dry…leaving you feeling like they’ve cast a spell on you.

The song comes with a visual that taps into the theme of the track with its moody and subtle motifs. The colours have a warm and inviting feel and her distinct performance style also comes into play here.

Emma Negrete is a Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter influenced by Etta James, Rihanna, and Kali Uchis. Originally from Des Moines, Iowa, she’s been performing since the age of 7. Negrete grew up competing in talent competitions all over the state, studied classical voice, and partook in several choirs. Negrete went on to study vocal jazz at the Chicago College of Performing Arts. Since then, she has performed over 400 shows all over Los Angeles, Chicago and in EDM nightclubs in Shenzhen (China) where she would find her true voice as an artist. During that time, she felt the most isolated from everything she has ever known in her life but inspired to write her Debut EP Algorithms. This experience caused her to fall in love with solo travel, and it sparked the desire to trace back her Mexico City-roots. From her experiences of being a cultural outsider, she strives to be a voice for mixed-race individuals that struggle with feeling accepted within their respective cultures. Negrete incorporates sounds from her travel journey, her resonance with mysticism and astrology, and personal experiences of surviving the world of sex work while trying to establish herself as an artist. She recognizes she’s not the first to walk this path and wants to be a light for those who face shame in their identity and are figuring out ways to make ends meet.
