Montreal-based French singer/songwriter/producer EENO T unveils her latest work entitled Atolls>>. The 5 track body of work is a collaboration with Montreal producer agoldencoast. The result is an experimental and conceptual album that explores the intricacies of life ranging from existential feelings, and self-expression to questioning the purpose of it all.
The first track “Brick!” helps set the tone with its future-pop-infused experimental and trippy vibes underpinned by EENO T’s rich and breathy vocal runs and knack for layered and mantra-like melodies that permeate through the dreamy-like soundscape. She doesn’t conform to the norm and delivers an expressive and stylish performance with a touch of vulnerability. This is followed by the surreal “Speak up (Ho’oponopono)”, a reflective tune that makes references to the Hawaiian practice of forgiveness and reconciliation. Here, EENO T employs a handful of off-the-cuff vocal techniques bolstered by her tri-lingual proficiency. She leads audiences into an atmospheric world with earworm melodies and heartfelt lyrics that explore the concepts of integrity, expressing one’s true feelings and being free from the world’s invisible constraints. This is followed by “Hawai”, a dark R&B tune steeped in airy vocal runs and sultry melodies. The track starts with an ethereal texture before the beat drops into a plateau with pounding downtempo drums, and moody textures underpinned by EENO T’s rich vocals. Once again, using layered vocal runs and dynamic arrangements, she creates a sense of urgency and depth on this track. Besides thrilling audiences with melodies, she also brings to the fore her rapping skills.
The last two tracks, “Pangée” and “127.4FM (Outro)” are a testament to EENO T’s non-conformist approach to music making. The former is predicated on a pro-environmental message delivered in her unique style. Over plucky drum grooves, cinematic textures and dark strings, she states her concern with many emotions while drawing us deep into the mix of the action with a seamless fusion of French and English lyrics. The latter is not exactly a song but rather a medley containing EENO T’s songs being scanned through an analog radio and gives us a tip of the iceberg of what she has in store for the future.
Overa, Atolls>> has a cohesive sound arrangement and detailed theme from start to finish. The icing on the cake is EENO T’s vocal prowess and knack for penning relatable tracks.
EENO T moved from Rennes (Brittany, France), to Montreal in 2020 and has since developed her sound in the bubbling city. Besides being a trip-hop-tinged live looping solo act she is also the lead singer of a neo-soul/jazz ensemble, Cône Orange. She plans on releasing a 4-track EP with Ultra Stellaire under the Waaavy records label, and an EP recorded at Studio Sophronik with her group Cône Orange.
